From Overheard in New York

Midterms?

Guy #1: Dude, the prof is such a bitch!
Guy #2: Yeah, it must've been that time
of the month for her.

Girl: That is, like, so incredibly sexist! Ugh! [Storms off.]
Guy #2: What the hell was that all about?
Guy #1: Must be that time of month for her, too.
Guy #2: For real.

This at first sight is kind of an ammusing joke (not a very good one!) but it can be disected to reveal some interesting stuff.

for instance I would be interested to hear if people think the guy's behaviour/thoughts really are sexist. One one hand they probably are simply defering blame for their proffessor's behaviour away from themselves (ie their own behaviour in class, lack of attendence, poor work, all the ussual things that stress out teachers). Insteed they blame the teacher's periods for what they percieve as bitchyness. which raises the question, what exactly did the girl find sexist - the characterisation of the woman as a "bitch" (used by many people in a gender specific way) or the rather offhand reference to periods?

Now on the other hand would it not be rather disrespectful if men NEVER recognised that women opperate within a more fluctuating hormonal regime. That some women do have their moods significantly altered by factors they can't control. Sure, in this case they weren't being subtle or respectful towards their teacher - but can men never refer to the relationship between menstural cycles and moods without being labled sexist?
